Every writing project is unique, and the methods that help you draft one novel may not work for another. If you’re getting started on a brand new project this Camp, NaNo Guest Vee James has some suggestions for different techniques to help you explore your story.
It took a few NaNos before I realized I was developing different
techniques each time I sat down to the challenge. I think we all do this
naturally, but it helps to step back and observe the process. If you’re
strictly a pantster, you’ve been working on the story ideas in your
head. If you’re a planner, you’ve set to put the story concepts,
characters, and an outline of what you are about to produce on paper.
Some people take a hybrid approach to NaNo. Granted, the basics remain
the same: butt in chair, accomplish the hourly/daily goal, and allow
yourself to tell your story.
I discovered that each unique novel
presented particular challenges, and I had to adapt my style and writing
techniques in order to explore the story and keep the production
happening. Some of these came from writing instructors and wonderful
podcasters. Some came from “how to write” seminars and workshops. Others
grew out of a feverish search for “more words.”
Here are five techniques I’ve found that helped me advance writing projects:
As a fellow shitty-dad-haver on Father’s Day (though at least mine has the decency to not contact me anymore, I’m so sorry about yours), I'll share what me and my sister do on this day every year: we celebrate Indadpendence Day! This mainly just consists of us congratulating each other on ridding our lives of the most toxic presence in our lives and stopping the cycle of abuse on that side of our family. We also usually try to find funny cards to each other. We don’t do it as much since she’s become a parent and has a partner and kids to actually celebrate a real Father’s Day, so I’ll extend my yearly celebration to you. Happy Indadpendence Day! May you continue to find freedom from your shitty dad and have happiness and peace without him, because you deserve it. ❤️
that’s a great tradition!! congrats on being rid of your shitty father, i’m really glad i’m rid of mine.
happy indadpendence to everyone who’s gotten rid of their shitty fathers, and good luck to everyone who has yet to get rid of their shitty dad. take care of yourselves!
tumblr mobile has seadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.
examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it “working”), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the ‘for you’ page.
the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:
reverse the recent image viewer update
scrap the new users ’for you’ page default setting
let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
increase efforts against spam / porn bots
make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
let us go nuts show nuts again… for real this time
commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
(suggestions welcome!)
to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don’t use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.
I suggest the 48 hours between the 30th of June to the end of the 1st of July.
this marks the end of pride month (for the “queerest place on the internet”) and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).
tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).
NEW EPISODE ALERT! It’s a Moriarty Monday with Daniel Davis, who played one of the most interesting and nuanced versions of Professor Moriarty ever in Star Trek: The Next Generation! We also talk early on about his role in Star Trek: Picard and how it moved the story forward, so if you haven’t watched the third season yet, you may want to?
Daniel also goes into what he’d like to do with his character, if allowed, in the future, and we talk about his original TNG episodes, The Nanny, and even The Hunt for Red October! This is a conversation you will not want to miss.
Trans Missourians on HRT, call your doctor as soon as possible and get a 90-day supply or as much as they’ll give you.
Lots of us are going to have to relocate or go through costly and/or illegal channels to acquire HRT now.
I invite trans people in MO to add their payment links this post. We desperately need support. We need people to give a shit right now. This is life-or-death for many of us.
Here is a link to the diy hrt wiki. It has a lot of information for getting hormones without a prescription. There isn’t as much stuff for getting testosterone but it has a lot of information for estrogen and it’s a good place to start.
Tumblr is known and also spoken of by its user base for its high proportion of lgbt+ users, but I’m curious as to if the lgbt+ user base is actually as large as though or if its just confirmation bias, so…
In this second episode focused on Ken Ludwig’s Moriarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure, and its world premiere at the Cleveland Play House, we talk this time with the original cast: Christian Pedersen, Nick Gaswirth, Jeff Bender, Olivia Gilliatt, and Talley Gale!
(Sidebar: This is the only time you are ever going to hear the Professor himself open a podcast episode. 😁 That was so much fun.)
There are two places in which we talk spoilers — one is our now-normal spoiler section (suggestions for naming it are welcome!) — and the other happened first during the course of the conversation. The first moment is brief and happens between 0:38:04 and 0:38:16 — believe us when we say you’re better off not spoiling this for yourself if you don’t want spoilers!
Our actual spoiler section had to be shortened due to time constraints, so 1:01:38 to 1:07:15 is where you need to beware of talk about the very end of the play.
Quick note: We’ve been told by a friend that the spoilers didn’t feel very spoilery since they didn’t know the play. Fair enough, but we like to err on the side of caution with these things!
In this recent episode, we talk with renowned playwright Ken Ludwig and his right-hand Ashley Polasek (does that make her a Watson or a Moran?) about Ken’s new play Moriarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure, and its world premiere at the Cleveland Play House. There are a lot of delightful peeks behind-the-scenes, some excellent insights into storytelling with Sherlockian characters, and, well, quite a lot of gushing from Madeline.
There’s also a section where we talk full spoilers — literally, we do genuinely talk about the end of the play. So if you want to remain unspoiled, stop listening at 00:56:05 and come back at 1:20:30 to hear what Ken is up to now!
(You can also listen to the episode on the podcast player on our website, as well as on Spotify, Amazon Music, and iHeart Radio.)
Hello, hello! We are Dynamics of a Podcast, the only podcast dedicated to Professor James Moriarty, Napoleon of Crime and archnemesis of Sherlock Holmes!
After two years, we are expanding our social media presence a bit and setting up shop here on Tumblr (our head of social media finally decided that she wouldn’t get burned out by adding one more social to her pile).
So what do we do? Can you really have a whole podcast about Moriarty? As it turns out, you really can! Especially over the past couple of years, when there has been so much new Moriarty content appearing — the anime and manga Moriarty the Patriot, Audible’s Moriarty: The Devil’s Game, Enola Holmes 2, Star Trek: Picard (a cameo, yes, but totally still counts!), Titan Comics’ M.O.R.I.A.R.T.Y.: Clockwork Empire, and Ken Ludwig’s Moriarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure.
And we are working hard to bring you news, reviews, and interviews! You can listen to the show on our website, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and other places. We even have a Ko-fi account and a Patreon set up if you’d like to help support us (the links are in the About page on the website).
Please check us out, and enjoy! And stay tuned, because we’re about to bring a certain gentleman onto the show…
can’t relate to the people who never get invested in female characters because even when I was a little kid I would always immediately choose them as my favourites and root for them in every situation
