@staff A) Know your userbase. How many of us do you think are going to go for what this ad is selling??? B) Give us the option to say “Don’t show me this ad again”!
I genuinely don’t mind seeing ads! I DO mind seeing offensive ones, and not even being able to opt out of seeing those particular ones without paying for it!
Hope you’re having a lovely week! I am hugely excited for s2 for the obvious reasons but also because I have been a big fan of John Finnemore for many many years.
Thus I am curious; was there a particular project or aspect of his style of his that made you want him on the team? I love both your work so much x
Are you tired of trying to look on the bright side, and to keep faith? Cause I sure am. But also – the alternative is far less helpful in making the changes that we need. So: to tiny steps in the right direction, to voting and all the million other things we do to bend the long arc of history.
8 previous years’ birthday comics on tumblr and AO3.
its like a real life version of that children’s song with the magic bridge that you had to dance across
Highlights:
–all the old people –one dude who starts doing the Cotton-Eye Joe and has the steps on lock –quinceañera girl with a dress bigger than the circle –lots of kids but particularly the dude who’s doing the helicopter with his little girl –an entire section of Millennials doing dance moves I recognize, oh the nostalgia
The above examples have been provided with the authors’ permission to demonstrate what these look like.
Basic rundown:
They are all 3 sentences long
Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever
No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story
The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post
Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly
There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate
what fresh hell is this?
Well, this is a new one. Haven’t seen this yet, but we’ll see…
Every writing project is unique, and the methods that help you draft one novel may not work for another. If you’re getting started on a brand new project this Camp, NaNo Guest Vee James has some suggestions for different techniques to help you explore your story.
It took a few NaNos before I realized I was developing different
techniques each time I sat down to the challenge. I think we all do this
naturally, but it helps to step back and observe the process. If you’re
strictly a pantster, you’ve been working on the story ideas in your
head. If you’re a planner, you’ve set to put the story concepts,
characters, and an outline of what you are about to produce on paper.
Some people take a hybrid approach to NaNo. Granted, the basics remain
the same: butt in chair, accomplish the hourly/daily goal, and allow
yourself to tell your story.
I discovered that each unique novel
presented particular challenges, and I had to adapt my style and writing
techniques in order to explore the story and keep the production
happening. Some of these came from writing instructors and wonderful
podcasters. Some came from “how to write” seminars and workshops. Others
grew out of a feverish search for “more words.”
Here are five techniques I’ve found that helped me advance writing projects:
As a fellow shitty-dad-haver on Father’s Day (though at least mine has the decency to not contact me anymore, I’m so sorry about yours), I'll share what me and my sister do on this day every year: we celebrate Indadpendence Day! This mainly just consists of us congratulating each other on ridding our lives of the most toxic presence in our lives and stopping the cycle of abuse on that side of our family. We also usually try to find funny cards to each other. We don’t do it as much since she’s become a parent and has a partner and kids to actually celebrate a real Father’s Day, so I’ll extend my yearly celebration to you. Happy Indadpendence Day! May you continue to find freedom from your shitty dad and have happiness and peace without him, because you deserve it. ❤️
that’s a great tradition!! congrats on being rid of your shitty father, i’m really glad i’m rid of mine.
happy indadpendence to everyone who’s gotten rid of their shitty fathers, and good luck to everyone who has yet to get rid of their shitty dad. take care of yourselves!
tumblr mobile has seadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.
examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it “working”), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the ‘for you’ page.
the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:
reverse the recent image viewer update
scrap the new users ’for you’ page default setting
let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
increase efforts against spam / porn bots
make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
let us go nuts show nuts again… for real this time
commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
(suggestions welcome!)
to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don’t use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.
I suggest the 48 hours between the 30th of June to the end of the 1st of July.
this marks the end of pride month (for the “queerest place on the internet”) and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).
tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).
NEW EPISODE ALERT! It’s a Moriarty Monday with Daniel Davis, who played one of the most interesting and nuanced versions of Professor Moriarty ever in Star Trek: The Next Generation! We also talk early on about his role in Star Trek: Picard and how it moved the story forward, so if you haven’t watched the third season yet, you may want to?
Daniel also goes into what he’d like to do with his character, if allowed, in the future, and we talk about his original TNG episodes, The Nanny, and even The Hunt for Red October! This is a conversation you will not want to miss.
